whales arent that stupid
I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa and worked on the charter catamarans that took tourists out to Robben Island before leaving to join the yachting industry.
We were sailing along in a stiff Southeaster and doing about 15kts when a Southern Right whale (like the one in the video) breached a mile ahead and to port. It breached again, this time closer. It was the classic "constant bearing, decreasing range" scenario!
Suddenly, it broke the water with another breach about 10m abeam to starboard! We (the crew and guests) were so stunned that no one had time to snap a photo as we stared in awe at the underside of its belly! I can still remember the black and white markings.
If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I would not believe it either. If it had stuck us from below, we would have been capsized for sure! Sailing with no engine and going at that speed - perhaps the whale saw us at the last moment?
